Fields was born on April 16, 1996, in East Amherst, New York. He played college lacrosse for the University at Albany Great Danes, where he was a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist and a four-time All-American.

Fields was selected by the San Diego Seals in the first round (third overall) of the 2019 NLL Entry Draft. In his rookie season, he scored 55 points in 12 games and was named the NLL Rookie of the Year.
